You have the option to request private screening at any moment and bring along a chosen witness during the screening procedure. A TSA agent of the same gender does the screening.
The pat-down procedure will be described by the officer both before and during the inspection. The purpose of the pat-down screening is to see if there are any forbidden goods hidden beneath clothing, hence enough pressure must be used to assure detection. If you have a medical condition or any locations that hurt when touched, you should let the officer know.
Why pat-down screening is required?

Only passengers who trigger an alarm on an AIT or walk-through metal detector or who want to forego the AIT are subjected to a pat-down. It is a layer in our arsenal of defenses against the threat posed by non-metallic explosives.

Travel Checklist
Before packing
- Carry-on liquids, gels, and aerosols must adhere to the 3-1-1 liquids rule.
- less than 3.4 ounces per container
- 1 quart-size, transparent, zip-top plastic bag (all liquids must fit in bag)
- Per traveler, one bag
- Be sure to get TSA-recognized luggage locks if you plan to buy one.
- Put a card with your name and phone number on it and tape it to your electronics.
When Packing
- Layer goods in your bag (shoes one layer, clothes one layer, electronics one layer, etc.)
- Firearms must be unloaded, stowed in a closed, hard-sided container, and declared to your airline. They are only permitted in checked baggage.
Before Leaving for the airport
- Allow ample time to go to the airport early.
- Put on shoes you can take off easily.
Before Entering the Checkpoint
