Kerteh Airport is only small and was built to serve the oil platforms some 100-200 kilometres offshore in the South China Sea. Most of the flights are in helicopters operated by Malaysia Helicopter Services and the workers from Exxon Mobil and Petrona are shuttled back and forth. Petrolim Nasional Berhad Petronas own and operate the airport through their East Coast Regional Office.
