My Sister Ednajean Jallah had a very terrible experience after paying 1,180 USD for a ticket from Monrovia to China. The flight delayed more than two hours before leaving RIA. By the time she arrived in Ghana to get on her connecting flight (Air France) she was told that she was late. She slept in Ghana against her will and went to the airport the next morning just to find out that she couldn’t fly with Airfrance unless she had a temporary Visa even though she was just supposed to transit in France for a couple of hours and go on to China. Considering all the complications, she decided to cancel her ticket and book another flight. Upon receiving her request, Kenya Airways Liberia informed her that it will take one week to get a refund that will be in the neighborhood of 500 USD. My sister was charged a penalty for the late arrival of the plane that subsequently made her miss her connecting flight which she wouldn’t have boarded even if she was on time because of visa issues that were never communicated to her in the first place.

This was the absolute worst airport experience of my life and I’ve traveled to over 20 countries, and taken over 100 flights in my life.

    1. The first experience was trying to leave Monrovia, Liberia for a vacation to Ghana. I was booked on Kenya Airways online. Little known to me, the “booking” showed I was charged and even had a boarding pass, but there was one extra step I was supposed to take to confirm. I arrived at the airport with my suitcase. Upon entering the airport, via the Kenya Airways door, an employee in uniform said he “had to” carry my suitcase for me. He pulled it about 10 feet to the counter, then said I owed him $20. I laughed him off, but he was persistent. Next, I tried to check in for my flight. The first Kenya Airways employee said my ticket was not complete. When I inquired what she meant, she waved me off, ignored me, helped other people, and did EVERYTHING in her power to NOT SPEAK WITH ME. I was bewildered and approached a different employee, who also proceeded to ignore me. I asked if the ticket wasn’t fully booked, if I could pay the difference now, or if I could just buy a ticket now, if the flight had an extra seat. More averted eyes, more ignoring. Most of the employees were standing there doing nothing, while one woman took phone calls and helped customers. A guy rolled up in a 3 piece suit and slammed a wad of cash (my guess about $300 USD) on the counter, and he was treated like a king. I finally said, “Do I have to show you cash to get some assistance?” The response was, “No ma’am. No cash.” MORE IGNORING. I exited the airport to ask my Liberian friend, parked outside, what I should do. He walked back in with me to try and talk to someone, and the guard said, “You’re not allowed in.” I explained that my luggage was inside, so I had to go in to get the bag at the very least. He then said, “No. You’re allowed in. HE’S not,” pointing to my friend. We both went in anyway. More ignoring. I finally left the airport in tears. If Kenya Airways in Monrovia, Liberia were the last way out of that crazy country, I would opt to travel over land, boat, hot air balloon, or camel, than deal with the blatant abuse and discrimination that I endured from the Liberian staff in Monrovia. I know you all lived through a war and are probably still undergoing the effects of PTSD, but there is really no excuse for treating foreigners with the hatred that you do. You are simply perpetuating the ideas that made your country a war-zone in the first place.

    Happy New Year,
I am Kaipee Luther Newray, a Liberian born journalist who just arrived from India after completing a two year Master of Arts in Journalism and Mass.
I write to inform you that one of my overnight suitcases was prevented by Kenya Airways staff from coming to Liberia while boarding KQ 203 from Mumbai to Naribo, on December 30, 2023.

According to them, my overnight bag exceeded 7kg and I should have paid extra money for the excess.

I informed the team that I paid 8,000INR for the seized overnight seized bag from Dehli to Monrovia and presented the receipt but they said the money was only meant to take the overnight bag from Dehli to Mumbai Airport despite I was told it was from Dehli to Monrovia.

I then requested them to give my overnight bag to do the necessary adjustment to 7kg but they refused demanding that I pay before boarding the aircraft.

The staffers at Dehli Airport told me that the payment was done from Delhi to Liberia but Kenya Airways team assigned at Mumbai said it was only recorded for Dehli to Mumbai instead.

They further forced me against my will to signed a document stating that my beg wasn’t going on the aircraft KQ 203 “due to insufficient funds” or else I will not board the flight nor get any ticket refund which I felt was unfair to me as a customer.

I asked them to exclude the 7kg and allow me to pay for the remaining kg at $5.50USD per kg which is indicated on your site but they also refused.

They further threatened to destroy or dispose of my things the moment once I board the flight or before arriving in Liberia and I think this was also unfair to me because business and racism are far different.

I asked them to also send the overnight bag to Liberia so I can pay for the excess and collect from the office in Liberia but they refused.

I had serious difficulty communicating with them due to language barrier as they kept on speaking Hindi and walking out of me.

However, I am kindly seeking your intervention on this matter to get my overnight bag soon.

Please get in touch with the team and let me know how I can get my overnight bag to Liberia.

    Thanks so kindly
    Kaipee Luther Newray.
