What is an Air Traffic Controller?

The U.S. air traffic controller workforce comprises around 14,000 highly-skilled men and women. While many are familiar with controllers in airport control towers, a significant number also work in en route control centers and terminal radar approaches, which are less visible to the public. These roles involve managing operations in stressful, high-energy environments where precision is critical, as there is no margin for error.
The air traffic controller workforce breaks down as follows:

Key Roles and Responsibilities

1. Safety Management: NATCA members monitor, coordinate, and guide aircraft safely through takeoff, flight, and landing.

NATCA Scholarship Program

• Spouses, children, stepchildren, and legally adopted children of NATCA members—whether active, retired, or deceased—are included.
• NATCA members need to maintain two years of continuous good standing in active union membership before submitting their application.
• Applicants must enroll full-time in accredited colleges and universities in the United States and its territories for undergraduate degree programs.

NATCA Charitable Foundation (NCF)

The NATCA Charitable Foundation (NCF) is a nonprofit dedicated to positively impacting lives. NCF operates entirely as a volunteer organization, with no paid employees, comprising individuals of all ages and professions. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM)

The NATCA CISM team provides confidential, non-judgmental, peer-to-peer support in the wake of stressful events to promote recovery following a difficult experience. Some examples of what we can help with are aircraft accidents/incidents, grief after an employee death or loved one, emotional aftermath of a natural disaster or personal life stressors.

How to Become a NATCA Associate Member?

NATCA also strives to further the public’s interest in safe and efficient air transportation. You can help NATCA in pursuit of this cause by becoming an associate member.

Membership and Representation

NATCA represents:

Each member contributes to the smooth and secure operation of over 45,000 daily flights across U.S. airspace.

Retired NATCA Active Volunteers (RNAV)

Retired members can remain engaged with the Union via the Retired NATCA Active Volunteers (RNAV) program. Annual membership dues are $35, while a lifetime membership costs $350.

Platinum Retired Membership

It is a complimentary membership granted automatically to NATCA members who belong to one or both specified categories.

• NATCA members must have paid dues as active members for at least 20 consecutive years before retirement.
• Charter members must have paid dues consecutively from the inception of their membership until their retirement date.
