Emirates Airline Checked Baggage Allowance / Size / Weight / Fare Types

Emirates Airlines free baggage allowance is based on total amount of weight or on how many pieces of luggage you have and is called as the “Weight or Piece concept”.

Weight Concept

  1. It applies to all routes, except when you travel to and from the Americas and from Africa (for tickets issued before 9 August 2021).
  2. Emirates Skywards Platinum, Gold, or Silver member, you could also enjoy extra baggage allowance on routes that use the weight concept.
  3. Each individual bag must not weigh more than 32kg.

Checked baggage dimensions for weight concept

The total dimensions (length + width + height) of an individual bag should not exceed 300 cm (118 inches). No Exceeding bag not accepted as checked in luggage. If you travel from Dammam International Airport, your bag should not exceed 215 cm (84.64 inches).

How will be the baggage applied when travel from Australia, New Zealand, or Asia, Dubai?

Travel from Australia, New Zealand, or Asia to North or South America, Africa

  • The weight concept will apply for the entire ticketed journey, when travelling from Australia, New Zealand, or Asia to North or South America includes a sector in Europe or a stopover in Dubai for longer than 24 hours.
  • If you’re travelling into Africa with a stopover of more than 24 hours, the weight concept may apply.

Piece concept (the Americas and Africa)

  1. It applies only on flights to and from the Americas and Africa.
  2. Your allowance depends on where youā€™re travelling, your fare, and your travel class.
  3. Emirates Skywards Platinum and Gold members are eligible for 1 additional piece of checked baggage at 23kg/piece in Economy Class and 32kg/piece in Business Class and First Class over the ticketed limit.

For tickets issued on or after 9 August 2021, the piece concept applies for flights into Africa as well.

*If you travel from Africa and ticket was issued before 11 May 2020, you may check in two pieces of baggage weighing up to 23 kg each in Economy Special.

Checked baggage dimensions for piece concept

  • The total dimensions (length + width + height) of each piece must not exceed 150 cm (59 inches).
  • Youā€™ll be charged an additional fee for any individual items exceeding dimensions of 150 cm (59 inches), up to a maximum of 300 cm (118 inches) or 215 cm (84.64 inches for travel from Dammam International Airport.
  • If an individual item has total dimensions greater than these specifications, it canā€™t be checked in as baggage and will need to be sent as cargo or freight.

Sports equipment – Golf / Bicycles / Ski equipment

Emirates will accept sporting equipment as checked baggage and part of your standard baggage allowance. If you need to take a bicycle as checked luggage, please contact the office at least 24 hours in advance. Special packaging rules may apply.

Weight Concept:

  • Not exceed 300cm (118 inches) and sent as cargo or freight. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Piece Concept:

  • Not exceed 300cm (118 inches). Any sporting equipment with total dimensions exceeding 300cm (118 inches) cannot be transported as checked baggage and must be sent as cargo or freight.

How to carry Firearms designed for sporting purposes (target pistols and rifles, air guns, safari rifles, hunting rifles) as checked baggage on Emirates flights?

  1. Firearm must completely unloaded
  2. Dismantled and packed inside a suitcase or standard gun case.
  3. Approved by Emirates no less than 3 days before your flight.
  4. Please complete the firearms form (only available in English) in the contact us section of our Help Centre to start the approval process.
  5. The maximum gross weight of the ammunition carried by any single customer is 5kg (11lb).
  6. Customers travelling in groups must carry ammunition in their own separate bags, with no single bag carrying more than the 5kg (11lb) limit.

Special conditions apply to customers wishing to carry firearms on flights into or through Dubai:

Customers who wish to bring firearms and ammunition into the UAE must obtain prior clearance from UAE Customs and the UAE Ministry of Defence. To obtain this clearance, customers must contact these government departments directly.For transfer and transit customers who are connecting to onward flights, prior clearance to travel with firearms and ammunition must be obtained from the Dubai Airport Police Department and the Department of Civil Aviation.

Ski equipment

Ski equipment carried as part of your normal baggage allowance. Additional charges may apply when checking in ski equipment. You may contact local Emirates office for more information.

A set of snow ski equipment may consist of:

  • 1 pair of skis, 1 pair of ski poles and 1pair of ski boots, or
  • 1 snow board and 1 pair of boots

A set of water ski equipment may consist of:

  • 1 pair of standard water skis, or
  • 1 slalom water ski

Other sports equipment

Emirates will accept wind surf boards, kite surfing equipment, kayaks, body boards, pole vault or other sporting equipment as checked baggage and you can take a part of your standard baggage allowance, provided:

  • Any sails are detachable and collapsible.
  • Packed in a hardā€‘shell packing case.
  • Limited Release will required.
  • Total dimensions: not exceed 300cm (118 inches).

For surf boards, the following precautions must be taken:

  • Fins should be removed, or, if they cannot be removed, firmly packed with polystyrene foam.
  • Both nose and tail should have bubbleā€‘wrap or neoprene foam attached for protection.
  • The rails (sides of the board) should have cardboard down the sides to absorb shock.
  • The board must packed in a properly padded surfā€‘bag.

FAQ:

1. Can I travel from Iraq with a power bank?

  • Power banks not allowed on departure from all airports in Iraq (Basra and Baghdad).

2. My baggage is damaged in transit, what to do?

  • You need to file a claim before you leave the airport by approaching the nearest Emirates representative or the baggage services desk and found in the customs hall, near the baggage claim area.
  • You must contact your local Emirates office within 7 days in writing, if you have left the airport without filing a claim.

3. Are there additional baggage allowances, if Iā€™m travelling with an infant?

  • Weight Concept: Infants have a baggage allowance of up to 10kg (22lb).
  • Piece Concept: Infant tickets include 1 piece of baggage, regardless of cabin class. This piece must be 23kg (50lb) or less, with total dimensions (length width, height) not exceeding 150cm (59 inches).
