IATA Considerations for handling funerals and coffins with Turkish Airlines
Taking funerals and coffin is considered as special handling in Air plane.
Packaging and Labeling
Funerals must be packaged in a very careful way that
- does not cause any leakage or bad odor
- must be placed in a sturdy wooden or metal coffin to prevent damage
Funerals in Coffins
Accepted coffins are metal zinc coffin, lead coffin or a solid wooden coffin, wrapped with a sack/canvas cover
Funerals in Ashes
Accepted in wooden box, crate, special lid container shock-absorbing packaging and effective protection against breakage.
Please note: Mixed cargo is not accepted when transporting a corpse
Documents Required
Death certificate which states the following information:
- Name & Surname of the deceased
- Birth place, date, year
- Death place and date
- Death Cause (Describe how the death occurred whether it is a natural / accident / murder / any infectious disease)
Things to note
1.When transporting funerals from the other country to Turkey, the death certificate must be translated in Turkish along with the written approval from the consulate located in the country you send.
2. If the cause of the death is not natural, additional documents may be required. For eg: If the death is by infectious disease / accident / murder, Autopsy report is required.
